Reform Dither On Climate Proposal Following Planned Protests

Reform councillors said they would submit the next attempt at their climate-wrecking motion in January following their previous withdrawal mid-meeting, and the agenda released today (January 21st) shows no climate motion submitted by Reform.

Extinction Rebellion King’s Lynn have called off our protest planned for January 29th in response. We will still continue to push the council administration to do more to protect West Norfolk and the world from the worst of the climate and ecological crisis.

We hope that Reform councillors in West Norfolk have looked at the overwhelming evidence on climate change and nature loss and have changed their mind about their misguided motion.

Perhaps the councillors read the report the UK government released yesterday which details national security risks from climate change and nature loss. The report makes clear “There is a realistic possibility some ecosystems start to collapse by 2030 or sooner, as a result of biodiversity loss from land use change, pollution, climate change and other drivers.” This is the reality of Reform’s game playing, as the report says “The impacts will range from crop failures, intensified natural disasters and infectious disease outbreaks to conflict within and between states, political instability, and erosion of global economic prosperity.” The British public and the global community would suffer from Reform’s policies.

The overwhelming majority still wants more climate action, not less – 89% of the public want governments to do more to tackle the climate crisis. There is a “silent majority” in favour of decisive action, yet politicians are still behind the curve. We call on people in West Norfolk to join climate and nature groups, whether that’s us in XR or any of the other groups, together people can make real change.
